Look after yourselves
January 28, 2002
Dear Sir,
Violent assaults and robberies against Bermuda's citizens and our visitors are becoming too frequent and alarming. There is very little doubt that most of these attacks are drug-related and when they occur in our homes it is even more alarming.
My advice to people who live alone, particularly our older citizens, is to be very vigilant of their surroundings. Never open your door to anyone who you are not familiar with without being prepared for any eventuality. And to Bermuda's seniors, many who live alone, you have to learn how to even the odds. If you are in fairly good health, take a course in the art of dirty street fighting where anything goes, because it's more than likely that your attacker will be much younger than yourself.
These protective measures may sound vicious and Draconian to many, but unfortunately these are the times in which we are living.
