Ship makes sudden detour after crew member falls ill
The 57,075-ton container ship Sea Land Integrity arrived in Bermuda on Saturday night when a crew member fell ill.
The ship's chief officer, who is 48-years-old, was transferred from the vessel via stretcher to the pilot boat St. George, three miles east of St. David's Head, and then taken to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital by ambulance from Ordnance Island. The vessel resumed her voyage from Houston, Texas, to Cagliari, Italy, later that evening.
Earlier on Saturday, three vessels ran into difficulties near the Island.
At 11.20 a.m., 30-foot powercraft Siwel 3 ran aground in Riddell's Bay between Riddell's Island and Haggis Island. There were no injuries to people on board and no damage was caused to the vessel. The vessel floated clear at high tide.
At 4.12 p.m., a 19-foot powercraft reported disabled 200 yards off Spanish Point. The local vessel Tangalooma, outbound from Dockland, towed it to safety at Hamilton Harbour. The 16-foot powercraft Brown Eyes contacted Bermuda Radio at 4.28 p.m. to say it was disabled one mile off Daniel's Head. Marine Police boat Heron III proceeded from Hamilton to tow the vessel, which had two people on board, to Robinson's Marina.
The Oleander arrived from Port Elizabeth, New Jersey, on Sunday, carrying 166 dry containers and 44 refrigerated containers, as well as seven flatbeds and mafis and a boat on a trailer. It sailed from Bermuda yesterday morning.
The Songa Challenge arrived in the Dockyard from Texas yesterday for fuel. She was set to continue making her way to Azores today.
The Bermuda Islander will be carrying 131 containers and 29 refrigerated containers when it calls into Hamilton tomorrow.
On Friday, the crew ship Europa will call into Hamilton for one day before departing on Saturday at noon, while the propane gas carrier Gas Sincerity will oil dock in for one day on Saturday.
