Gas saving tips from the pros

If you watch the evening news you are likely aware of fluctuating fuel prices overseas and how this seems to be affecting those populations.

Although these rapid rise and falls are not always visible in our market, you may have noticed an increase in local fuel prices, however slight it may be.

The Mid-Ocean News went online to find some down-to-earth advice on how to maximise your mileage.

Many of the websites insist your number one priority should be ensuring your vehicle is properly maintained and having it serviced regularly.

It is estimated that a poorly-tuned engine can increase fuel consumption by up to 50 percent and changing your vehicles spark plugs regularly can also save you money at the pumps.

Another priority is changing your driving habits and numerous websites suggested the following tips:

[bul]Monitor your tires as under-inflated tires or poorly aligned wheels waste fuel by forcing the engine to work harder. It is estimated that under-inflated tires can increase your fuel consumption by five percent.

It is important to let the tires cool down before checking the air pressure and remember that out-of-line wheels, evidenced by uneven tread wear, should also be aligned by a professional.

[bul]Consolidate your daily trips and errands as some trips may be unnecessary.

Also, try to travel when traffic is light so you can avoid stop-and-go conditions.

[bul]Avoid excessive engine idling and shut off your vehicle if you are going to be waiting for someone for more than five minutes.

[bul]Observe speed limits as speeding decreases your kilometers per gallon. While speed limits are set for your travelling safety, better fuel efficiency also occurs. Travelling fast in a lower gear can also consume up to 45 percent more fuel than is needed.

[bul]Drive gently as sudden accelerations guzzle fuel. It is important to anticipate traffic patterns and adjust your speed gradually.

These “jack rabbit” starts not only increase fuel consumption, but are also hard on your tires and brakes.

[bul]Get rid of excess weight by removing unnecessary items from the vehicle and store only essentials in the trunk. Less weight means better mileage.
