<Bz32>New store in historic Armoury

Located on One Water Street, “Family Clothing Stop” is an exciting new store in historic St. George’s offering attractive clothing and accessories for each family member.

This means things for all sizes from toddlers to extra large and plus sizes for adult women and men. Teens are bound to love the pretty cotton skirts in an array of colours, short and long, with soft, colourful summer blouses. There are matching shoes and bags too. For locals it is especially nice because it is not necessary to travel to Hamilton to buy a pretty new blouse or fashionable under garments — the same holds true for gentlemen.

The owner, Evannie Dickinson (pictured, right), is very excited about finding a niche and fulfilling a need for locals and visitors. She is hopeful that the cruise ship passengers will appreciate her lovely cotton choices. Ms Dickinson said: “Our selection offers clothes that are a chic casual but they also become evening sophisticates with fashionable accessories. What is nicer than crisp, yet soft, white cottons in warmer weather?”

Prior to opening her own business Ms Dickinson managed the Castle Harbour Golf Shop for 21 years. Describing herself as a people person and a Christian, she relates that her new shop is a convenience for locals who don’t wish to leave St. George’s to shop. This will also be true for cruise ship passengers who need to purchase socks, underwear or a new outfit for a special outing.

Sometimes you don’t really need a reason to shop, something attractive just catches the eye. This compels the hand to the wallet. Shopping is a happy way to relax also. Even when shopping, customers will be getting a little dosage of St. George’s World Heritage flavour just by dropping in this charming clothing shop, dating back to the 18th century.

History:<$> A synopsis of the history for this article is taken from: Bermuda’s Architectural Heritage, St. George’s”.

This property, located at the foot of Blacksmith’s Hill, is known as “The Old Armoury”. It was built between 1794 and 1796 by shipwright Adam Brown. Facts show that the building was sufficiently completed in September 1796 for John DuMont to open a dancing school in “Mr. Brown’s Long Room” on the top floor.

When assessed in 1800 the building was worth 1600 pounds making it one of the most valuable residences in St. George’s.

Adam Brown gave the western portion of his lot to his brother, Samuel Brown, who was the blacksmith for whom Blacksmith’s Hill was named.

In more recent years, this property was conveyed to the Bermuda Volunteer Forces Association in 1922. During the next five decades the building was occupied by the Bermuda Volunteer Rifle Corps and acquired the name, The Armoury.

Robert Trew acquired the property from the Crown in 1973 and thanks to his care the landmark survives today. Today the quaint shop, freshly renovated, is home to a sparkling new business, Family Clothing Shop. The phone is: 297-5517.
