<Bz45>Rangers shatter Hood record
The last perfect record in Commercial League football was consigned to history with crushing effect on Saturday when Key West Rangers hammered Robin Hood 4-1 to set the A Division championship race alight.
Less than a week after playing Premier Division high-fliers Devonshire Colts on level footing in a narrow FA Cup defeat, Hood were put to the sword at St. John’s Field by a club that is only in its third year of existence.
Armel Thomas opened the scoring for the home team in the 20th minute and Richard Wilson sent them into the half-time interval feeling optimistic after a 35th-minute goal. Wayne Augustus tallied in the 71st minute and, even though substitute Shane Brown notched for Hood in the 79th, it proved too much for the champions.
Des Minors, a former Hood marksman who holds the unofficial scoring record in this division of football, added further insult with a goal in the final minute.
The result cuts Hood’s lead over Key West to three points with the second-placed team, who have a superior goal difference, still to play a rescheduled match against Tuff Dogs.
MR Onions seized on the opportunity to enter the race after an 8-0 clobbering of Cable & Wireless. Paul Coates, Edson DiFrancescantonio and Richard Helme scored two goals apiece while Rael Coen and an own goal accounted for the others, as Onions closed the gap from the leaders to four points.
North Village Rams recorded only their second win of the season, 3-2 against Lobster Pot, who have returned apparently to their early-season swoon. Village struck early and often to stun Pot with Paul Trott on target as early as the fourth minute. Ricky Hill tallied eight minutes later and Kevin Grant opened a three-goal lead in the 37th.
Troy Berkeley pulled one back a minute before half-time and Jeremy Leese scored in the 57th, but Pot could not muster any further riposte.
At BAA Field, the Wanderers saw off Vasco Mariners 3-1 after going behind to a 25th-minute strike by Filipe Ferreira. Gary Wilson (36th) levelled for the home side before the half before Chris Worsick (62nd) and a Brian Crook penalty (82nd) made the game safe.
Mariners, still reeling from the five-year suspension handed to Stephen Rodrigues last week for assaulting Dennis Rodrigues, the club principal, had Jose Luis Barroso dismissed by José Pimentel late in the match for using foul and abusive language.
The remaining match in the A Division saw Tuff Dogs nip PHC Raiders 1-0 on a 72nd-minute goal by substitute Jeff Franklin.
St. George’s All-Stars, the B Division leaders, opened a five-point gap after a 5-3 win over Devonshire Colts All-Stars while Prison Officers, in second place, were being upset 4-3 by Valley International.
Terence Carlington netted twice for St. Gorge’s with Cal Rayner, Morris O’Brien and Eugene Crockwell also scoring. Michael Looby (2) and Kenny Dill replied for Colts.
Prospect/Fire continued their recent recovery with a tidy 3-0 win over Dockyard Falcons on goals by Stephen Caines, James Walters and Dean Martin.
Somerset Extros snapped a five-match winless run with a 4-2 win at home to Bermuda Pest Control. Without a win since October 6, Extros came good finally with goals by Donnie Simmons (2), Mike Bremar and Mike Corday. Jamie Matthews and Chris Davis scored for Pest.
The remaining match saw Devonshire Lions outscore Wolves Pack 5-3. Arthur Sinclair netted twice for Lions with single tallies coming from Charles Simons, Chris Pitch and Phillip Clarke. Ashton Thomas, Horace Landy and Casey Burgess scored for the Pack.
