Thinking outside the box!
Instead of focusing on his inability to secure a job in business and marketing, Jamel Bailey decided to open his own business and create an opportunity for himself.
Five months ago, the 25-year-old launched Accessible Supply, an aquatic maintenance service for both fresh and saltwater tanks and ponds.
Along with offering his maintenance services to both commercial and residential clients, Mr. Bailey also breeds and supplies guppy feeders, which help keep mosquito larvae down as well as serving as meals for carniverous fish.
When asked why he took the decision to open up a service, which appeared far removed from his career objectives, Mr. Bailey corrected The Royal Gazette: “Who says that I am? I am still using the skills that I learned in university and applying them like I would in any other business environrment.”
Point very well made. But what made him choose to open this particular service?
“I have always had a fish tank—since I was six years old, so I chose to do something that I loved without having to leave my field,” Mr. Bailey replied.
“No matter what the business, the same things apply—marketing is how you obtain and keep up with your clients.”
Happy that his clientele base is growing, Mr. Bailey admitted that he still hopes to work one day in the corporate world.
“I do want a taste to see what it’s like,” he said.
Mr. Bailey offered advice to those who may be daunted when their career paths may not take the direction they anticipate.
“In this day and age, don’t let obstacles hold you back. To me, success is defined by knowing when to make that right turn in the road instead of going straight.”
