Mould can harm art, books, rugs — and your clothes

Paul Gressin a specialist on indoor environments has the following recommendations to combat mould.

[bul] In clothes: dry-clean or bleach.

[bul] In loose rugs, upholstered furniture and mattresses: start and end with real hepa vacuuming. If it is a level 3 stage where mould is growing through out — throw it out.

[bul] Books: Difficult to remediate. This is a very specialised conservation process that is not fool proof. Books can be freeze-dried but that is costly and leaves stains.

[bul] Artwork: Where there is actual growth, again the process is specialised and expensive. The work should be boxed and sent overseas. There are only six or seven companies that do this in the US.
