July 11, 2000 Dear Representative Myrick, My family and I recently returned from a vacation in Bermuda. While there, we were struck by both its natural beauty and the sense of pride residents take in their stewardship of their islands. The only real blight on the country is what remains of a World War II defense installation run by our country.
We entered into a ninety-nine year lease with Bermuda (as negotiated by Britain) in the 1940's but have subsequently abandoned the site as, no doubt, a peace dividend of the end of the cold war. It is depressing that the only truly ugly site on Bermuda is the direct responsibility of our government. As the only super-power remaining, I believe that our accountability in issues such as this will represent our true measure as a nation.
Please look into this matter and contribute that at least one of your constituents feels that it is our obligation to clean up after ourselves.
