Thanks for the coverage July 6, 2000
On behalf of the Shady Rest Sunshine Club and myself, we would like to take this opportunity to thank the Press for doing an excellent job of covering our Golden Sports and other Senior activities over the years. Many times the Press is criticised, so we felt it necessary to show what a fine job we feel you do.
Thank you again and we look forward to a continued affiliation with the Press throughout the Millennium.
ALICE M. BURCH Sandys Parish Spread houses around July 2, 2000 Dear Sir, St. David's Islanders are fighting for their heritage and it is indeed an uphill battle as the tide of government has been running against them.
Unfortunately, apart from a convenient cosmetic shift by one MP, the constituents of St. George's South are not getting the representation they elected at the last General Election.
Mr. Editor, it is extremely important to note that it is impossible to compare the development now at Southside with the former Baselands occupation by the United States Navy. While hundreds of persons lived and worked on the former base, the area was totally self-contained and quarantined off from of St.
Davids. Hence, the impact on the neighbouring St. David's community would be much less (apart from the loss of land), than today's situation.
Mr. Editor, the US military had its own Police service, postal service, supermarket, schools, entertainment, restaurants, airport and shipping terminal. Hence, the sociological impact on the St. David's community was far less than the development that is now taking place. In fact, when you include the proposed Texas Road development, Lighthouse Road and Cove Valley developments, together with Southside, St. David's will house well in excess of 50 of Bermuda Housing Corporation's new housing pool. That in itself is a tremendous burden for one area, which will cause that community to undergo an enormous sociological metamorphosis.
Mr. Editor, it was noteworthy that the St. George's South MP tried to ignore the second petition, with over 400 signatures, which, in addition to outlining the dissatisfaction with the high density development, also took issue with the areas Members of Parliament. Moreover, considering that over 600 total signatures expressed concern over varying events related to the high-density development on Texas Road. It would behove the Government to have a rethink and "wrap their minds around'' spreading the development around! SENATOR H. KIM E. SWAN St. George's
