Close, but no contact for ships
Westward avoid contact while they are berthed on Front Street.
Once berthed, the two ships remain just five feet apart but never touch due to special scheduling and procedures devised for the ships.
Marine and Ports has the 682-foot Horizon berth before the 674-foot Westward .
Stern ropes securing the Westward use forward bollards to avoid rubbing the Horizon . When the ships leave, they remain secured at the bow while using stern thrusters to edge out.
Harbourmaster Mr. Ian Clark said Horizon has two to three feet to clear the wharf behind her stern. Tugs are on stand-by if needed. The situation is eased later in the week when the more manoeuverable 637-foot Nordic Prince replaces Horizon .
TIGHT FIT -- The cruise ship Westward snuggles into her Front Street berth on Monday almost beneath the bow of the cruise ship Horizon .
