The 138-foot ship, owned by the Astrid Trust in England, dates back to 1921 and has an interesting past.

She was under Dutch ownership for 17 years, then sold to a Swede who kept her until 1976, when she was sold to a Lebanese owner.

The 32-berth Astrid , which has a 84-foot mast and a sail area of 5,250 square feet, was disabled in the English Channel by a fire in July of 1977. The Astrid Trust was formed in 1985 under Sir Basil Blackwell and Princess Anne.

The Trust restored the ship, which is now used to give young people experience aboard a tall ship.

The Astrid is handled in Bermuda by Harnett and Richardson Ltd. Also expected at Dockyard yesterday was the small sail training craft Lord Portal .

The joint service vessel, which will stay in Bermuda until April 16 as she prepares to return to the United Kingdom, carries a mixed crew from the army, navy, and air force.

The USS Kennedy Battle Group was in the Bermuda operating area for a Tiger Cruise this week.

A Tiger Cruise is a morale and recruiting tool in which crew members of United States Navy ships may "sponsor aboard'' close relatives and friends for a one to several-day cruise.

The "Tigers,'' as they are called, get to see what life is like at sea with the US Navy. About 500 guests and officials were processed through NAS Bermuda and transported to the USS Kennedy Battle Group last week.

The Oleander arrived in Hamilton on Sunday and discharged 167 containers, including 30 refrigerated ones. There were also two trailers and assorted cargo in the garage deck.

The Oleander , the largest container ship serving Bermuda, sailed on Tuesday for Port Elizabeth. She is handled by Container Ship Management Ltd.

The Somers Isles arrived from Florida on Monday and discharged 81 containers, including nine refrigerated ones. Loose cargo included two boats. She was to sail today.

The Bermuda Islander arrived in Hamilton on Tuesday and dis charged 88 containers, including six refrigerated ones. She sailed on Tuesday.

The Bold Venture arrived at the US Naval Air Station on Monday and discharged 21 40-foot containers, including two refrigerated ones. She sailed the same day.

The container ships Somers Isles , Bermuda Islander , and Bold Venture are handled by Meyer Agencies Ltd.

The Danish paper ship Scarab is expected to arrive in Hamilton tomorrow, bringing 325 tons of newsprint from Dalhousie, New Brunswick. The 308-foot Scarab , handled by John S. Darrell and Co. Ltd., is expected to sail on Sunday for Puerto Rico.

The fishing vessel Anna C , an American-registered ship fishing in Bermuda waters with Government permission, arrived last week and is to be in and out of Bermuda for the next six to eight weeks. Her agents are Meyer.

The research vessel Atlantis II , carrying the submersible Alvin , returned to Bermuda due to mechanical problems and is expected to spend the next week at Penno's Wharf.

SILHOUETTE -- The 75-year-old Astrid , an iron-hulled sail-training ship, arrived at Dockyard yesterday with a crew of young trainees, including Bermudian Shane Thorne.
