US destroyer in for six-day visit

Launched in 1971 from the Avondale Shipyards, the 438-foot ship was designed to operate the now-discarded DASH unmanned helicopter, according to Jane's Fighting Ships. She was modified to accommodate the Light Airborne Multi-Purpose System (LAMPS) and the SH-2F Seasprite anti-submarine helicopter.

In 1979 a programme was started to fit 3.5-foot bow bulwarks and spray strakes to all ships of the class, adding 9.1 tons to the displacement of 3,011 tons.

The ship will be at the Royal Navy Dockyard until Wednesday. The US Navy tanker Sealift Mediterranean arrived at the Esso Oil pier on Saturday with a load of fuel from Charleston, South Carolina. Handled by Meyer Agencies Ltd., she sailed on Sunday for Houston, Texas.

The cruise ship Crown Monarch arrived at St. George's on Monday with 527 passengers. Handled by Meyer, she returned to Alexandria, Virginia yesterday.

The Song of America arrived at St. George's on Tuesday and shifted to Hamilton yesterday before sailing for New York tomorrow. Handled by John S. Darrell, she carried 1,453 passengers.

Horizon , handled by Meyer, arrived in Hamilton on Monday with 1,654 passengers and shifted to St. George's yesterday. She sails today.

Dreamward arrived in St. George's on Monday with 1,424 passengers. Handled by Meyer, she shifted to Hamilton on Tuesday and returns to New York today.

Meridian arrived at the west end on Tuesday with 1,325 passengers. Another Meyer ship, she sails tomorrow.

The Oleander , the largest container ship serving Bermuda, arrived at Hamilton on Sunday with 148 containers, including 41 refrigerated ones.

She also carried a boat on a trailer, and loose cargo that included lumber and switch gear.

Handled by Container Ship Management Ltd., the Oleander sailed on Tuesday for Port Elizabeth, New Jersey.

Bermuda Islander , handled by Meyer, arrived at Hamilton on Monday with 70 containers, including six refrigerated ones. She also carried two tanks and a horse. The ship sailed for Salem, New Jersey on Tuesday.

CREW DRILL -- Crew from the Song of America conducted a lifeboat drill yesterday. The weekly drills enable the crew to prepare in case of emergency.
