Brownie roses and thanksMarch 26, 2010Dear Sir,

Brownie roses and thanks

March 26, 2010

Dear Sir,

There have been several articles on Girl Guides in recent editions of The Royal Gazette, and I think we have more than proved that Girlguiding Bermuda is very much alive and well!

One of the projects that coincidentally occurred this year was the shipping in of a quantity of Brownie roses, a plant which produces a beautiful yellow flower, specially produced in 2004 for the 90th Anniversary of Brownies.

When the project was first mooted, I met with someone from the Bermuda Rose Society who was very supportive of the idea. Finally, after several failed attempts, I managed to bring 100+ plants into the island at the beginning of this year. In my naivety, I had visions of just taking the plants, putting them in pots and selling them off. How wrong could I have been – and thank goodness for the ladies (and men) of the Rose Society, who at this point in time, with no fuss and expecting absolutely no return, totally took over the care and nurturing of the plants at their location at Tulo Valley.

Between them, BRS members carefully pruned, soaked, potted, watered, treated, pruned some more and generally lovingly tended the plants which flourished under their wonderful care. Every single rose bush survived and last week two were planted at Government House, with two more to be planted at Botanical Gardens. The remaining plants were sold this last weekend and nearly all were magnificent.

Totally unintentionally there was no mention of the tremendous undertaking by the Rose Society on behalf of Girlguiding Bermuda in the various articles published and we sincerely apologise for this oversight. The bottom line is that without their invaluable help, there would have been no roses to sell!

Thank you, BRS!

Who to believe?

March 12, 2010

Dear Sir,

In the debate over House N*gg*rs. Who to believe?

On one side of the date we have a professional accountant, deeply involved in community affairs, a loving father and an upstanding citizen.

On the other hand we have a convicted bank robber.

Hmmm?
