It's not a 'done deal'August 18, 2010Dear Sir,

It's not a 'done deal'

August 18, 2010

Dear Sir,

Ms LaVerne Furbert is quoted as saying that, "85 percent of the delegates will vote for Ms Paula Cox to become Party Leader and Premier of Bermuda". First, how does she know at this early point who these delegates are since they largely have not been elected as yet? Is something remiss or undemocratic going on here?

Second, why does Ms Furbert continue to take 'thinking people' (as are these delegates) for granted? These delegates will no doubt assess the individual candidates dispassionately and make their choice as expected.

In my view, it is not a 'done deal' that Paula will be our next Party Leader and Premier and such a comment is paternalistic at a minimum and insulting at worse. Our delegates are more sophisticated and politically savvy than Ms Furbert gives them credit for. In truth, I think she is going to be in for a big surprise in October 2010.

End the gun violence

August 22, 2010

Dear Sir,

As an avid reader of the online version of The Royal Gazette, I am astonished for such a small country at the amount of violence especially the amount of gun violence. Many years ago, I lived in Bermuda for six months while working for the US Navy. I have fond memories of Hamilton, Horseshoe Beach, the Botanical Gardens, Somerset Bridge and many more places. But as I read daily, the amount of violence makes me wonder if it is safe to come for a vacation with my family. The scenery while driving my moped down South Shore was breathtaking. The people of Bermuda always treated me with kindness and respect.

Something must be done to curb the violence. I am sure many have done an Internet search for Bermuda and have also read the stories of the violence. I know tourism is down with the current economy and that some want to bring in some gambling. I don't believe having gambling is a reason why I would want to visit but I know the constant gun violence will give me a reason why I should stay away.
