Boat crew rescued near Somerset Bridge

Monday's holiday was not without marine incidents, according to Bermuda Radio which received a report from power boat Bayliner that it was disabled in the Somerset Bridge area.

The report came in at about 5 p.m. and stated that ten people were onboard. Bermuda Radio then issued radio broadcasts of assistance to nearby vessels.

At 5.55 p.m. vessel Sea Assist responded to the call, enabling Bayliner to be secured at Ely's Harbour.

The Norwegian Majesty rescued four people caught in a violent storm on its way to Bermuda.

The 24-foot vessel Not On Call was 30 miles off the South Carolina coast when harsh weather drove the crew to call for help.

With fuel and oil running low, water pooling quickly and night falling, they listened for around two hours as other boats caught in the storm were rescued.

The four sailors pushed deeper into the storm simply to stay afloat, moving further from shore while burning their fuel before the Majesty turned around to make the rescue, on Saturday.

At around 8.30 p.m., an hour after changing course to aid the sailors, the Majesty pulled alongside the ship, blocking the wind while its crew worked to pull the stranded crew on board.

Mark Harold, the owner of Not On Call, was the last person off the boat, barely having time to throw the anchor before the engine finally shut down.

"The thought of losing my boat was just about more than I could stand," said Mr. Harold, who arrived in Bermuda on Monday.
