Unemployed women hoping to re-enter the workforce will get a taste of the busy season at Demco, thanks to a partnership with Government’s Community Driven Development programme.

The florist has recruited ten CDD volunteers to deliver flowers on foot from its new Demco To Go outlet in Church Street, over Valentine’s.

It’s hoped the work experience and networking opportunity will improve their chances as they search for long-term employment.

And the good will doesn’t end there: Demco will give a portion of its delivery charge to the CDD ladies — who will in turn donate to autism intervention charity Tomorrow’s Voices, a charity supported by Demco.

“Talk about spreading the love!” said Demco owner Carmen Phillips.

The CDD programme, which runs under the auspices of the Department of Human Affairs and Bermuda Women’s Council, aims to help its participants become self-sufficient.

Under the initiative, women are placed in volunteer positions at companies and charities, with the hope they will gain skills and eventually get hired.

Deborah Blakeney, Director of the Department of Human Affairs, said: “These women are doing everything they can and more to find themselves employment.

“This partnership with Demco means they will get work experience and help build contacts with people who can help them get work. Partnerships like this help employers see what they can do.”
