Internship programme leads to full-time role for Page at Marsh
Bermudian Devin Page has landed a full-time job with Marsh after successfully completing an internship programme with the company last summer.
Mr. Page was taken on as an insurance assistant at the broker's Bermuda office having fulfilled the 12-day The Broking Experience initiative.
The programme, which was the first of its kind run by Marsh, was designed to introduce Bermudians to broking careers within the Island's re/insurance industry.
In his new role, Mr. Page will learn the details of the renewal process and gain further exposure to the industry, including monitoring renewal control systems, inputting placement documents for invoice processing, checking receipts of policies from markets, and reviewing and forwarding these to clients, as well as working with a team of brokers, client advisers and global broking coordinators in bringing together placement strategies and service.
The 22-year-old, who grew up in Canada and has two degrees — a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration and a Bachelor of Arts in International Studies from Southern Adventist University in Tennessee, from which he graduated in May, originally applied for a job with Marsh a year-and-a-half ago to get some international experience and the company contacted him back to offer him a place on its internship scheme.
He accepted and enrolled in the programme alongside three fellow Bermudian university graduates and undergraduates, gaining experience of working in a number of the company's departments, including property, casualty, financial and professional liability, and reinsurance, and getting a comprehensive overview of the role of a re/insurance broker, as well as a taste for the market.
"The Broking Experience was an in-depth, real-life look at the work being done in broking," said Mr. Page. "Marsh employs brokers from all around the world, many of whom have been in the industry for 20 to 25 years.
"They sat down with us one on one, explained the concepts and took the time to teach us the processes. It was an invaluable experience. To start my career with Marsh is amazing — it's an incredible opportunity."
During his time on the programme, Mr. Page spent some one-on-one time with senior brokers from the company, listening in on their calls and sitting in on their meetings, seeing the front line of the business first hand and tapping into their wealth of knowledge.
He said the best part of the experience was negotiating and dealing with people, as well as problem solving and putting his analytical skills to the test.
Having finished the course, Mr. Page returned to Canada to work, but it wasn't long before Marsh, who had clearly been impressed by his performance, called him in for an interview.
"Right now I am just trying to learn as much and as quickly as possible and perfect my role and hopefully become a broker in the future," he said.
Above all, Mr. Page, who is also a keen volunteer, having run a series of programmes for the National Camps for the Blind and won the Federal Award for Community Service in Canada as a result, is just happy to return to his roots and to be working at the cutting edge of the insurance and international business sector.
Chris Reeves, managing director of Marsh Inc. and president of Bowring Marsh (Bermuda) Ltd., said: "We are very pleased to have Devin join the Marsh team.
"During his internship, Devin demonstrated a quick understanding of the broking world and an enthusiasm and passion that you can't teach. Devin will continue to be mentored by a team of highly experienced international professionals and we hope that he will flourish in his career."
The Broking Experience internship will be offered again in Summer 2010. Interested college students or recent college graduates can apply by forwarding a résumé to Sarah Randall at sarah.randall@marsh.com or Nicki Griffiths at nicki.griffiths@marsh.com">nicki.griffiths@marsh.com
