BAS enjoys strong first half

Bermuda Aviation Services Ltd.?s net income jumped 26 percent in the first half of its financial year as revenue grew strongly.

BAS, which has been rapidly diversifying from its core airport services business, said revenues rose three percent to $19 million in the six months to September 30.

Although income from operations fell nine percent to $2.3 million, net earnings of $2.4 million for the group were 26 percent higher.

Expenses for the period ending September 30, 2006 rose seven percent to $12.7 million.

?The first six months has been truly outstanding. Again, we are able to report record setting results as we make progress toward our long term objectives,? Group president Eugene Bean said.

?These numbers clearly underscore the momentum of BAS and indicate how well positioned we are to continue building on a great organisation.

?They also reflect the strong performance across the entire group of companies.?

The company said it would raise its dividend by 14 percent or four cents per annum effective November 10.

Benefiting from increased flight activity, earnings at Aircraft Services Bermuda Limited (ASB) were one percent better than those posted a year ago. Earnings in the company for the next six months are expected to moderate as airlines scale back flights for the winter.

BAS-Serco earnings were ahead six percent for the period against revenues that were four percent higher.

The transfer of the company?s aircraft rescue and firefighting unit to the Bermuda Fire Service is expected to take place next April, but BAS-Serco is optimistic it will retain some of the support services upon completion, the company said. Any revenue impact will not be felt until fiscal 2007/08.

The company said Butterfield Bank had renewed its facilities maintenance contract to 2011, and the Bermuda Government had done the same.

?Results in IBC Ltd. were also much improved despite downward pressure from increased fuel surcharges for the carriage of freight and parcels. The steady growth in the company is very encouraging.?

Crow Lane Bakery Ltd. sales declined due to the closure of the East Broadway outlet and the company said there was still work to be done to reduce other overheads.

?Weir Enterprises Ltd. had a remarkable first half with revenue being increased six percent. The company continues to meet the needs of the motoring public for good quality car and truck parts and services resulting in improved earnings.?
