Stirling Cooke names new director

Shareholders of Bermuda insurance company Stirling Cooke Brown Holdings Ltd. have announced that David H. Elliott joined the company's board of directors, giving non-executives a clear majority of the board.

Mr. Elliott, 59, retired in 1999 as chairman and CEO of MBIA Inc., the world's largest provider of financial guarantee insurance. He became CEO in 1992, and continues to serve on the company's board of directors. He was also director of two other property-casualty insurers, Gryphon Holdings Inc. and Orion Capital Corporation, until the recent sales of each of those companies.

"David Elliott's election is another important step in the creation of a strong, independent board dominated by non-executives," said Stephen A Crane, Stirling Cooke's chairman, president and CEO. Mr. Elliott is the third new non-executive director to join the Stirling Cooke Board in the last 14 months.

Stirling Cooke Brown, which has suffered from net losses and a tarnished image after recent lawsuits, recently changed its name to Atlantic Star Insurance Group Ltd. The name change will take effect within the next two months.
