Dreaming of Bermuda

In the news again: Bermuda, which has been received heavy criticism after a number of US companies moved their corprorate domiciles to the Island to reduce their tax bills, has made it to the funnies page in this Doonesbury cartoon that was published on Sunday. In the cartoon, a young computer scientist opts to establish her business not in the "greatest nation on earth", but in Bermuda. In the last panel, the sunbathing CEO is told her mailbox attendant is calling -- a reference to claims that many of the companies no more than a mailbox on the Island.

While US politicians continue to take pot-shots at Bermuda, it appears that the issue of corporate inversions has tickled the nation's funny bone.

The American comic strip Doonesbury ran a story last week of a young woman daydreaming about having her own company.

The captions show her overcoming doubts "To act on her vision of robust, profitable scaleable enterprise and to grow it in the greatest nation on Earth"

Then the twist - she's dreaming not of the US, but, Bermuda.

The story closes with the businesswoman sitting in a deckchair at the beach.
