Minors sets up travel website franchise

Entrepreneur: Kenneth Minors

A young Bermudian has set up his own ?personal travel agency? offering clients the chance to book flights, hotels and excursions.

Kenneth Minors, who is based in Lexington, Kentucky, runs a franchise of a major travel company YTB Travel, of Illinois.

Minors Travel is the name of the www.ytbtravel.com//minorstravel website. It has a format similar to more established online agencies, such as Expedia and Travelocity.

Mr. Minors paid $500 to Illinois-based YTB Travel as an initial fee and also pays a $49.95 monthly licence fee to keep his status as a ?referring travel agent? (RTA) for the parent company.

YTB then pays him commission for each sale made through the Minors Travel website.

?It?s a different way of marketing,? Mr. Minors said. ?YTB does not advertise on the television like Expedia. Instead it hires people, who purchase franchises and then they have to do their own marketing.

?The company recruits young entrepreneurs like myself to help bring it more business than the parent company could achieve by itself.

?I?m marketing it in several ways, through links on websites and through word of mouth.?

Effectively, 23-year-old Mr. Minors has his own business and he is targeting Bermuda as his main market.

?Bermudians do a lot of travelling and I have a lot of friends and personal connections in Bermuda,? Mr. Minors said.

?YTB has got a great relationship with vendors in the industry and so we can offer prices that are as good as Expedia or better,? he said.

He already has several clients and does not see the fact that he lives in Kentucky as a disadvantage when targeting the Bermuda market. ?With an internet business, you can run it from anywhere in the world,? he said.
