Trustworthy opens in The Old Cellar
After six months without a retail home, the Bermuda National Trust's gift shop, Trustworthy, has re-opened in the Old Cellar Lane off Front Street in Hamilton last week.
The shop, which used to occupy the space on Queen Street now rented by Trim's Plus, sold off all its merchandise in January. A spokesperson for the National Trust refused to say why Trustworthy vacated the space.
The committee which oversees the shop's operation could not find a new home until four months ago. The space they found was previously rented by the Gem Cellar and required substantial remodelling.
With a new carpet, ceiling, lighting and air conditioning, the shop reopened with a more extensive selection of merchandise than before, even though the new space is smaller. Twelve volunteers work at the shop during the week, and more than 40 volunteers in total assist with its operations.
Hope Bowker, a real estate agent who is also the vice chairman of the Trustworthy Committee, said that the shop will hire a manager next month. The manager will be the shop's first ever paid employee.
Ms Bowker said Trustworthy donates about $25,000 to the National Trust every year. The shop first opened its doors ten years ago at Waterville, the Trust's headquarters in Paget.
The National Trust also operates a similar shop in St. George's at the Globe Museum.
