Union Street salon launches its own beauty product line
After more than 15 years in the hair care business, the styling team at Spence Hair Design has now launched into complete body and hair care with the introduction of its own beauty line, Spence's Essence.
The brainchild of stylist and manager Gina Spence, Spence's Essence was created to provide consumers with a natural product with helping capabilities.
"I was dissatisfied with what could be purchased in stores," Ms Spence told The Royal Gazette. "I know the therapeutic ability of essential oils and often they are diluted. I want people to be able to have the real thing."
As high alcohol content in hair products is not healthy for the hair and scalp, Ms Spence said instead of criticising, she decided to take action.
"I thought that I could make something myself."
Ms Spence's mission started two years ago when she studied aromatherapy and grew tired of products being used for preventative measures. Instead, she said, she wanted to "kill" the problems, especially those related to scalp and skin disorders.
"One of my clients had a terrible dandruff problem which she thought was hereditary. I created a scalp oil to help her address her dry scalp and now it's gone," Ms Spence said.
The mother of one also has created a product which kills Bermuda Rot, a common ailment on the Island.
"Bermuda's climate helps promote fungus, particularly in the scalp. People don't have to live with that. Sometimes they just don't know what to use," she said.
Besides scalp oil, Ms Spence's sister, Saleemah Ingemann, has created a head to toe body shampoo which is available in peppermint and strawberry almond.
Her brother Kurvin, has also co-created an after-shave spray for men which eliminates razor bumps and helps to relax the skin after shaving.
Spence's Essence products include massage oils, anti-balding oils and shampoos, and personalised essential body oils.
"You're actually receiving aromatherapy while you're wearing them. After a consultation, we will make an oil that caters specifically to your needs," Ms Spence said.
All products are made at the Union Street hair salon.
"The demand is so high, we might have to rent a room for a mini-lab," Ms Spence said.
