Web-based lifestyle magazine launched

Web-editor Laura Grayston recently launched bermudaliving.com.

A new lifestyle magazine, and with all Bermuda content, has been launched but don't rush out to the nearest news stand.

Bermuda Living is not a high-gloss page turner but a slick online magazine. That makes it just a computer click away at www.bermudaliving.com.

Editor-in-chief Lauren Grayston said the site, which is designed to have the look and feel of a real-time periodical, is intended as a celebration of "all that is unique about life on the rock".

So the recipes and arts and craft projects featured will use ingredients and products that are readily available in Bermuda.

Take this month's recipe - pesto that could be made with that basil growing in your backyard.

The project was the brainchild of Ms Grayston, 29 and partner David Sean Hill who also runs his own company Storm Design.

The first issue of Bermuda Living took about six weeks to get off the ground, according to Ms Grayston. And just like a monthly magazine, the site will feature new content at the beginning of every month. And past issues will be available, with an archive system under construction and a search engine underway.

Ms Grayston added that the site has been a group effort with the Bermuda Living team including Ms Grayston's sister Julie Grayston Smith, Heidi Marshall and Michael Batista. Although the group are working on the project as a side, Ms Grayston said it is "part-time verging on full-time".

Along with Ms Grayston, Ms Marshall has taken on marketing and advertising. Behind the magazine's monthly recipe feature is Julie Grayston Smith, who also runs catering company Bouquet Garni. And Mr. Batista, called the Bermuda Living Mr. Fix It, supervises the technical elements of some of the Bermuda Living projects.

For revenue, the site will depend on advertising dollars.

As time goes on, Ms Grayston said the site intends to expand and include regular features such as "Mother and Child" and a featured Bermuda charity each month.

So far the site has had over 78,000 hits and an average of 4,613 pages viewed. Ms Grayston said the volume of times the site had been viewed was a surprise as they had not done any advance promotion or marketing.

But Bermuda Living is now off and running and coming next month is the Cup Match feature with a focus on outdoor living including picnic recipes and out of the way picnic spots.
