New owner intends to upgrade Little Theatre
A little bit of Hollywood is set to come to Bermuda later this year.
That is thanks to Shandon Easton and his wife Giovanna, who have just taken over the Little Theatre and Movies-2-Go in Church Street and already have grand plans to recreate the ultimate experience for the Island's theatre-goers.
Mr. Easton, who also owns Unique Audio in Warwick and has been in the audio visual industry for the past 17 years, bought the business from businessman Lee White, who is now going to concentrate on his real estate business.
The business had been passed down through three generations of the White family over almost 50 years, but now Mr. Easton is looking to stamp his mark on the enterprise with a new Hollywood theme.
"It all came about because I used to work with Lee eight years ago and we have always been friends, so basically one day we just got into conversation and he said I would be the perfect person to own the place considering my background," said Mr. Easton.
"I thought he was just joking at first, but after the second or third time he mentioned it I thought he must be serious about it."
Mr. Easton, who has spent the past eight years running Unique Audio, where he sells and installs audio systems, said it was a dream come true to finally own his own threatre.
"I have always dreamed about having a threatre," he said. "So this coming about is like a dream come true in this sense because I have always wanted to give back what I have learnt and know about audio visuals for people to have the ultimate theatre experience."
Mr. Easton believes Bermuda's theatre industry is lagging well behind the US and the UK in terms of quality and he wants to help bring it back into the 21st century.
"I would say the calibre of theatre in Bermuda is outdated if you compare it to the east coast of America, which is a real theatre experience," he said. He is planning to upgrade the surround sound system in the Little Theatre and give the whole place a facelift, including the red carpet treatment and Hollywood stars effect on the floor.
"I want to bring the Hollywood theme here and to brighten up the colours," he said. "The colours of a place make it so nice when you are walking through."
Mr. Easton plans to carry out the refurbishments over the next three months, including renovating Movies-2-Go and the entrance to the Little Theatre.
"I am actually working on putting my plans into action now, so hopefully everything will be in place in the next few months," he said.
"That is the whole thing - I just want to give people the best possible theatre experience they can get in Bermuda."
The Little Theatre is already showing morning screenings for summer camp children for $7 including popcorn and a drink and evening screenings for adults throughout the week, as well as a matinee performance on Sundays.
Meanwhile Mr. Easton has plans to expand the range of rental DVDs stocked in Movies-2-Go, focusing on childrens entertainment, the classics and world cinema, such as Indian films.
"There is a big range of movies already there, but I want to get more into providing kids movies," he said. The 32-year-old entrepreneur from Warwick would not reveal how much he had bought the business for or the amount he was going to invest in it, but he is planning to retain most of the staff.
"The Little Theatre is the main focus for me ¿ I want to get up and running and up to a standard I am comfortable with," said Mr. Easton.
"I have got a theatre a home which is awesome and I want to bring that experience to the Little Theatre. I just want to take things to another level and get people in Bermuda enjoying the full theatre experience."
