XL urges employees to seek balance of mind, body and spirit
XL launched its wellness programme, entitled "Stay Well", in partnership with Argus Insurance in October 2007.
Renee Wilson, benefits specialist in XL's human resources department, explained that, to kick-start the programme, employees were invited to complete a personal wellness profile, an online health assessment of their diet and lifestyle, with spouses and partners also invited to take part.
The programme enabled XL staff to generate their own personal health report that highlights the aspects of their health that are good and those that need to be worked on.
Other components of the wellness programme include employees tracking their progress via an online personal wellness profile; monthly wellness challenges; access to "Selfhelpworks", an online tool that provides lifestyle management programmes addressing weight, alcohol, smoking and stress; and access to an online wellness centre, which allows staff to research preventative measures and treatment options for all aspects of their health.
"We believe that when employees' minds, bodies and spirits are in balance, they will be more productive, less sick and generally happier," said Ms. Wilson.
"Therefore, our mission is to encourage and inspire a healthier lifestyle for our employees and their loved ones."
Since the wellness programme was launched last year, the company has extended monthly wellness challenges and prizes as an incentive to keep employees engaged and motivated in the programme.
"These monthly wellness challenges help our staff to improve their diet and lifestyle one step at a time," said Ms Wilson.
"Challenges have so far included 'Drink Plenty of Water Daily', 'Eat More Fruits and Vegetables', and 'Be More Physically Active Daily'. The challenges come with information explaining the benefits and a calendar on which participants can track their progress."
Also, the XL building in Bermudiana Road has a gym for all staff members to use. The facilities include treadmills, elliptical trainers, cycle machines, free weights, and Cybex weight machines.
Recently, the wellness committee — comprised of various employees throughout the company — has introduced ideas such as fitness classes (yoga, salsa etc.) during lunch hours to encourage staff motivation when it comes to health and fitness. XL also pays 50 percent of the annual cost for local health/fitness club membership dues.
