Lister: We must keep pace with latest technological evolution
TechWeek 2008 was launched as Minister of Energy, Telecommunications and E-Commerce Terry Lister touched a flat screen for the official opening instead of cutting a ribbon.
Techweek was created to raise awareness of technology and its use in Bermuda. After its debut in 2007, hundreds of people from all over the Island participated in the many events including many seniors who learned a great deal about e-mail and using the internet.
Mr. Lister said: "I'm excited about Techweek '08 and I would like to thank the team that has worked so hard to ensure this week will be a success. The Department of E-Commerce and all those who have worked to put this event together, thank you.
"We in Bermuda are very fortunate to be one of the most technologically advanced countries in the world, which is plain for all to see from our consistently high ranking in the annual Economist Intelligence Unit E-Readiness Rankings.
"In terms of access to technology, computer ownership and Internet penetration, as well as the increasing use of and management of technology everywhere in our lives, that affects everyone, everyday, we have much to be proud of.
"However, we cannot rest on our laurels. Technology is marching forward at breakneck speed and it is incumbent on us to keep pace with the technological evolution. We cannot let technology and the digital divide became a mechanism which widens the gap between the fortunate and less fortunate. We must ensure technology is used to level the playing field, enabling equal access and opportunity for all people."
Events for Techweek include a Digital Safari for school students, Lunch and Learns, including BlackBerry tips and tricks, the ultimate Mac experience, business Internet banking, animation workshops, tech tours, tech teas for senior citizens and more.
Sponsors include Renaissance Re, Ace Ltd., Bermuda Telephone Company, Bermuda Yellow Pages and Cable and Wireless.
