Tracy Harris smiles easily in her new craft shop located at the Heron Bay Marketplace Plaza, Middle Road, Southampton. She is happy and enthusiastic about her new shop, "By Hand'', which opened June 5 this year.

She loves her job as a craft artist. "I have been doing crafts since age 13 and I was frustrated about not being able to buy supplies for various art projects. I enjoy helping people find an art niche,'' she said.

Prior to owning and operating her craft business Ms. Harris was employed with RB&K Advertising.

"I have a passion for crafts. My favourite crafts are painted plant pots, candle making and cross-stitch.

Ms. Harris is an excellent teacher also. She does demonstrations in the store with technical instructions on everything she sells. "I will help any customer by showing samples.'' The store offers a large section of crafts for children ages three to 15 which are very popular. Children can receive free instruction as well as adults on craft items from "By Hand''. Some of the most popular items are: Painting by numbers for about $15.40, Long stitch embroidery, Cool Stuff anklets and bracelets.

In fact craft classes are offered by Ms. Harris: "Mom and Me'' is held on Tuesday afternoon from 1 to 2:30 pm and on Thursday from 10 until 11:30.

"Mosaic Tile Class'' for adults will be offered July 19.

"Candle Making'' will be offered on July 22 and 26.

"My plan is to offer a new theme with supplies and instructions every two weeks. The price will include supplies,'' she advised.

If you have never done a craft before but would like to do one Ms. Harris advises to do something you like and start small. Ask questions if you don't know about something.

Whether you already have the skills or want to learn a new craft "By Hand'' has a large variety of new crafts on the island.

"By Hand'' does special orders for customers and brings in special items at no extra cost. She offers group discounts for organisations such as schools, summer camps, and old folks homes.

"Being a small business I can't get into a price war with anyone but I can offer the best service possible.

"There is no better feeling than loving your job,'' she said.

For adults there are sun catchers, stencils and paints, woodscape art kits, glass etching, candle making, decoupage and many other interesting crafts.

When not crafting Ms. Harris enjoys spending time with animals, gardening and photography. She appreciates good friends and fine food.
