Air Canada joins buckle-up movement
landing in a bid to reduce the chance of in-flight injuries. The new seat belt policy, a first for a Canadian airline, is effective immediately.
Air Canada's Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Robert Milton said: "Air Canada has always recommended that people remain buckled up while in their seats. Ensuring our customers' safety at all times is our number one priority and today's announcement reflects that commitment.'' The objective is to reduce the chance of injuries resulting from clean-air turbulence -- unpredictable air currents caused by distant storm clouds and wind passing over mountain ranges.
After take-off, the seat belt sign will be turned off and passengers will be permitted to leave their seat. When they return to their seat they will be required to refasten their seat belt.
Delta Airlines made a similar announcement earlier this month. It is understood that the airlines are responding to the death of a passenger travelling on another airline between the US and the Far East.
