Briefing was a good chance to market Island, says Davis

Friday that a recent briefing in London, attended by senior writers from top UK business publications, was a chance to "aggressively'' market the Island as a leading international business centre.

"In particular, we emphasised Bermuda's long-standing policy of knowing its customers. This policy is what enabled us to establish a reputation for integrity and for honesty, where quality is valued over quantity,'' he said.

"You don't build that type of reputation overnight and Bermuda's experience as a jurisdiction, together with its long standing record of innovation, are competitive strengths that we need to market aggressively.'' Premier David Saul, Appleby Spurling & Kempe managing partner and International Bar Association Secretary General Dianna Kempe, and Bermuda Land Development Company chairman Vince Ingham, as well as Mr. Davis, participated in the briefing.

Mr. Davis provided an overview of recent developments in the Island's international business sector while the premier underscored Bermuda's commitment to international business.

Mrs. Kempe focused on legislative changes, including the Proceeds of Crime Bill.

Mr. Ingham provided information on base land investment opportunities.

Senior correspondents from The Financial Times, The Banker, International Money Marketing, Offshore Financial Review, Accounting Age, Investment International and The Lawyer attended.

"These gentlemen represent the target publications that form the core of our overseas media relations effort in the UK,'' Mr. Davis said.

"It's important to note that we didn't organise the briefing with a view to receiving immediate coverage,'' he said.

"Given the often stereotypical coverage that offshore business centres receive, we feel it is critical to stay in touch with the media and provide them with regular information about Bermuda.'' BUSINESS BUC
