Composter plans plant
International -- has served notice it intends to develop an area on the former US Naval Air Station for an industrial composting facility.
Bioferm Compost Systems International wants to develop a bio-fermenter, or compost making system, at Corregidor Avenue, next to Annie's Bay, in St.
Davids.
While talks with the Bermuda Land Development Company are still on-going, the company has applied for an operating licence under the Clean Air Act, although it has requested some amendments to its application.
It is also understood Bioferm officials have been to the Island on several occasions in the last couple of years scouting for locations and are now in the process of seeking permission from the Development Applications Board to move ahead with their facility.
The company has indicated it intends to carry out "in-vessel'' composting, which is understood to produce humus-rich soil in a matter of weeks.
Conventional backyard composting methods produce humus from "fermented'' organic waste, which is then mixed with soil, adding nutrients and biomass.
