Mr. Luttke, 63, is retiring due to the proposed acquisition of Corange's subsidiaries Boehringer Mannheim and DePuy Inc. by Roche Holding AG. The acquisition is still under review by authorities in the US and Europe.

Mr. Luttke had worked in California for Corange before arriving here in 1988.

He and his wife Birgit will be joining two daughters and four grandchildren in California, where Mr. Luttke has a home.

While in Bermuda, Mr. Luttke has been the point man for Corange's many donations to local organisations. He has also made personal donations and is involved with a number of community groups.

He is the co-founder and is chair of the Bermuda Association for the Advancement of Science and Technology. He also sits on the board of governors of The Bermuda College, and is a director of Stonington Hotel. He is deputy chairman of the Health Alliance, and a trustee of the Maritime Museum. He sits on the international companies division of the Bermuda Chamber of Commerce and is a member of the International Business Forum.

"I feel very much a part of Bermuda,'' Mr. Luttke said.

Corange's office lease at the Washington Mall will not be renewed when it expires in February, Mr. Luttke said.
