Discount travel club distributor in row over `exclusive' rights

Bermuda's Hotel Express International distributor Mr. Kevin Darrell continues to face difficulties selling memberships in the discount travel club.

Mr. Darrell, who paid Hotel Express $20,000 for exclusive distributorship rights in Bermuda, said that a local individual, who previously sold 100 memberships in Bermuda under an approved agreement with Mr. Darrell, has obtained 100 more memberships through Hotel Express' head office in Dallas.

"I was an agent to him and we had a contract but after two years (October 1993 to October 1995) I decided to discontinue the association,'' he said.

The 100 memberships were obtained by the individual from a representative of the US firm that was not aware of the exclusive agreement between Mr. Darrell and Hotel Express, he said.

A spokesman for Hotel Express said yesterday: "I think it is a good idea that Mr. Darrell let every one know he is the exclusive distributor in Bermuda.'' He anticipated that the sales by the other individual here would "cease and desist'' once his supply of memberships ran out.

Memberships cost about $50 and over various discounts on hotels, car rentals, cruise vacations and air fares.

There are an estimated 1,200 members of Hotel Express in Bermuda.

"I want people to know I am the exclusive distributor of Hotel Express in Bermuda and anyone who buys memberships from anyone else will not receive a quarterly newsletter or other special rates,'' he said.

Mr. Darrell, currently a senior at Howard University in Washington D.C., said he has a ten-year exclusive agreement with Hotel Express.

Prior to the individual who obtained the 100 memberships, Mr. Darrell ran into difficulties because others who had obtained memberships for sale continued to sell the product after he was awarded the rights.
