London Shop closes

doors due to the retirement of owner-manager Reginald Scott. The store closed at the end of June, but it is understood the premises will soon be occupied by two-way radio, pager and cellular provider Telecom Bermuda, which already has a retail outlet on the opposite side of the Mall's Church Street entrance.

Telecom Bermuda managing director Richard Scott said the company will be making an announcement shortly on its plans.

Meanwhile, The London Shop's neighbours Accents and Country Crafts and Nicholas Lusher Fine Art also closed in June, the former for good, and the latter to work out of home. Washington Properties manager Gail Arruda says it is expected the spaces will soon be filled.

C&W OFFERS FREE OVERSEAS CALLS BUC C&W offers free overseas calls To mark the opening of Cable & Wireless' new Customer Service Centre on the corner of Church and Burnaby Streets this Monday, the long distance carrier will be giving away phone cards which customers can use to make a free call anywhere in the world, from call booths in the new centre or any touch tone phone on the Island. There will also be a draw for an hour-a-month free international calling. The centre replaces the old C&W counter at 20 Church Street.

Spokesman John Instone said Bermuda had been chosen as the first site in the world to display the new look for C&W service centres worldwide. Customers can buy calling cards, settle accounts, apply for service, Telefax, Telex and make general inquiries from the new centre.

LOGIC NAMES COMPANY MASCOT BUC Logic names company mascot Logic Communications has announced the winning name in their "Name The Cheetah'' contest. The contest ran through the month of June and there were some 400 entries. The name Webster was chosen from a shortlist. Winners Christopher Rego, Richard Arnold, Deborah Blakeney-Deshield and Josh Richardson each received a year's free Internet service from Logic worth $480.

Logic marketing manager Sabrina Phillips said: "We tried to select a name that was representative of our major line of business -- Internet service.

Webster was chosen because of its relationship to the World Wide Web, commonly referred as the Web.'' TBI SAYS IT IS Y2K-COMPLAINT BUC TBI says it is Y2K-compliant TeleBermuda International Ltd. this week announced critical company systems were now Year 2000 compliant.

Steve Cusack, TeleBermuda's vice president of network operations, said the company had completed all the testing required to demonstrate compliance with the International Telecommunications Union guidelines for Year 2000 readiness.

"TeleBermuda has achieved Millennium compliance with its mission critical systems for the delivery of international voice and data services,'' he said.

The ITU definition means neither performance nor functionality of equipment dependent on computer software is affected by dates prior to, during and after the year 2000. Many computer systems are expected to be affected by the date change due to the way they were programmed in the past.

NEW WEBSITE, AWARDS FOR ACE AWD New website, awards for ACE ACE Ltd.'s new global logo and marketing campaign won three awards at the 76th annual Insurance Marketing Communications Association (IMCA) conference in Colorado last month.

The Bermuda-based insurer won awards in print corporate image, TV advertising and annual reports. There were some 40 entries. ACE also announced it has jazzed up its website to reflect its extra muscle in the world insurance scene after a recent takeover. The company said the new site would more accurately portray its "enhanced global presence achieved by its acquisition of CIGNA Property and Casualty''.

ACE Limited had almost $9 billion in assets and $4 billion in shareholders equity on March 31 this year. After the CIGNA deal was finalised earlier this month, ACE's operating subsidiaries operated in nearly 50 different countries and total assets ballooned out to around $30 billion.

Information about the entire ACE empire, its "people, products, company and financial news'' are a mouse-click away on the new site.

It also includes a corporate time-line and profile for anyone left scratching their heads at the never-ending announcements, reshuffles and buy-ups.

Investors are also catered for, with direct access to annual and quarterly reports, historical stock prices and dividend history available. ACE's new site is www.acelimited.com.

ERNEST & YOUNG NAMES MANAGERS APP Ernst & Young names managers Ernst & Young this week announced the appointments of two new tax managers to its tax team. James Dockeray joined the firm in January from an international accounting firm in Toronto and has more than four years experience in US tax issues.

He will be responsible for dealing with US taxation as it relates to corporate, personal and trust taxation. Surjya Mitra will be spending a week each month in Bermuda providing tax consulting services. The rest of the time he is at EY's International Tax Practice Office in New York, where he focuses on capital markets and international tax issues for insurance companies.
