Maatkari gets dressed for success
celebrating its first anniversary in its present location.
The shop sells colourful feminie clothes, a range of hemp garments, books on Africa, gifts from Africa, Indonesia and Mexico and a range of natural hemp cosmetics.
The store originally opened the store in Court Street two years ago, but says since she moved location to the spot above Coconut Rock it has opened her trade up to a wider base.
"We have a great customer base of both locals and tourists who are just passing,'' said manager and co-owner Maatkari TaMerry. "The location is great and the things we sell are very different so we do very well.'' The 32-year-old Bermudian co-owns the business with her husband, dentist Dr.
Amenemhet TaMerry. He is currently staying at home looking after their first child, seven-month-old A-Mya, and in six months time will be going back to work after the completion of a new office for his dental practice. From then, Mrs. TaMerry will take the child into the store with her.
Dr. and Mrs. TaMerry travelled together earlier this year to Europe on a buying trip, and came back with this season's collection of brightly coloured and richly patterned lush clothes.
"There is a lot of beige, beige, beige in America,'' said Mrs. TaMerry. "But in Europe there is so much colour and the detail is fantastic. The clothes are very feminine.'' Mrs. TaMerry says that she is constantly learning about how to progress her business, and explains she is gaining experience at every moment.
She said: "For instance, this year I could have done with more tops. People love the new feminine cut of the blouses, and I will be getting more things like that in the future.'' To celebrate her year anniversary at the shop, Mrs. TaMerry will be hosting a cocktail party for her clients at the shop on December 15 between 6.30 and 9pm.
One year old today: Shop manager and owner Maatkari TaMerry is celebrating the first anniversary of the opening of her shop TaMerry on Reid Street.
