Marks & Spencer uncorks new product line
for the first time.
The new development has the local St. Michael's Shop merely falling into line with other Marks & Spencer stores in other jurisdictions.
St. Michael's was a subsidiary of Archie Brown Ltd. before the parent was placed in receivership. All of the Archie Brown stores, including St.
Michael's were gobbled up by The English Sports Shop (TESS) Ltd.
The first shipment of wine was received by the company on Tuesday and by Wednesday were on display.
The wine list includes Italian, French, Australian, Chilean, Spanish, South African, Bulgarian and some German products. There are about 60 different wines on the list.
TESS director of operations, Ronnie Maughan, said, "We have very good quality and value on the wine list and we also have port, sherry and champagnes together with some sparkling wines.
"The Marks & Spencer Group themselves, carry a very diversified range of merchandise, including wines. We think that this will be useful feature to have around Christmas time.
"To be fair, we have seen Gosling's, for example, go into clothing lines with their Black Seal Shop.'' C. Bruce Robinson at Marks & Spencer said, "These wines give a description of the product, giving some indication what foods to drink it with. They are also all marked with how dry or sweet the wines are, using the number system for white wines and the letter system for red wines.'' The wine prices range from $7.50 to $20.50, and there are champagnes for $28.95.
Mr. Robinson said, "You know we took over this business (the St. Michael's Shop) in May. I don't know what happened prior to that, but I do know that Marks & Spencer would like to have these products in their stores. It's part of their image.
"We've expanded the range of the goods that Marks & Spencer carry. I'm really comfortable with the wines, though. We sold nine bottles in the first 15 minutes we had them on the shelves.''
