Premier congratulates `future leaders'
Premier Jennifer Smith has hailed the graduates sponsored by the Bermuda Foundation for Insurance Studies as the leaders of the future.
Ms Smith congratulated more than a dozen Bermudian students who had graduated from the College of Insurance in New York at her official residence Camden at a special reception.
The Premier, who attended the student's graduation ceremony in New York last month, said that the students were a shining example for the youth of the Island.
She told students: "Not only was I interested in what you have been doing, but I have also become your biggest fan.'' She added that the Bermuda Foundation for Insurance Studies was such a good training scheme it should be used as a template by other employers in their training. She said: "This is an opportunity to speak about how important it is for young Bermudians to take advantages of the opportunities that are presented.
"We are particularly fortunate in Bermuda to be a leader in international insurance and this presents unique challenges and opportunities for our young people. The students that are with us today are outstanding examples of the successful academic and professional careers that can be achieved with sound guidance from the industry and enormous determination and hard work on the part of our students.'' After welcoming over fifty guests to Camden, she said: "I will be watching your progress over the years and I expect you to become our next leaders.'' The Premier threw the party in honour of the scholarship recipients, recent graduates, mentors and insurance industry leaders who back the scheme.
Also at the event was Brian Hall, Chairman of the BFIS Board, who also congratulated the students.
He singled out Gino Smith, the College of Insurance's valedictorian, for praise.
He said: "Gino was disappointed in only getting a 3.95 average. That is the kind of person he is...Bermuda needs a well trained, well qualified workforce.
It is essential for our growth. Opportunities abound for these young people as the industry evolves.''
