Seeking to break Islamic stereotypes
attend two public lectures this week.
Visiting speakers Maulana Dr. Waffie Mohammed, of the Moslem World League, and Amirs Idris Mears and Uthman Morrison, have arrived on the Island especially for these lectures.
This week the Bermuda Islamic Community has chosen to focus the public's attention on Islam.
Amir Mears said he wished to share his 23 years of experience as a practising Moslem with Bermudians.
"I would like to break some of the stereotypes that exist about Islam and remove it from the pigeon hole,'' he said. "I want to make it relevant. Since the Iron Curtain fell Moslems have become the new public enemy.'' Amir Mears described the brand of Islam practised by Louis Farrakhan and the Nation of Islam as "nationalist and racist'' and said it was the intent of this week's lectures and meetings to set the record straight.
Meantime, Amir Morrison said his emphasis was going to be on encouraging Bermuda's Muslims to live ethically and set high standards of behaviour.
"I have not come to sell anything or to propagate a manifesto,'' he said.
"But I want people to discover their humanity and what that means.'' Both Amirs agreed that Islam called for "radical social change'' in Bermuda and a return to values that were present in the community of yesteryear.
Wednesday's lecture will be held at Bermuda College from 7-9 p.m. A venue for Saturday's lecture has not yet been found.
