Seminar aimed at elderley
community, will hold a day-long seminar entitled "A New Age For Old Age'' next Thursday.` The keynote speaker will be Ms Frankie Muse Freeman, an American attorney who served on the United States Civil Rights Commission under former US presidents Johnson, Nixon, Ford and Carter.
She was also Inspector General of the Community Services Administration during the Carter Government.
Ms Freeman currently chairs the board of directors of the National Council on the Aging, Inc. and is a member of the board of trustees of Howard University.
She is expected to discuss some of the common themes between civil rights, women's rights and the movement on behalf of senior citizens.
The seminar will be formally opened by the Minister of Health and Social Services, the Hon. Quinton Edness.
There will also be a panel discussion with representatives of Bermuda's banks, mortgage and insurance companies.
They are expected to explain "home equity conversion instruments'' which enable people to use the equity in their home to provide a secure monthly income.
Another key issue to be discussed is the importance of educating youth about aging.
Dr. Paul Shepherd, Age Concern chairman, said: "The whole day will be full of vital information that, if used, can make life significantly better for older people.
"We urge everyone to take advantage of this great opportunity.'' The seminar will be held at Cathedral Hall, Church Street, Hamilton, between 9.30 a.m. and 3.30 p.m.
