Talks aimed at improving labour relations
Experts will conduct a series of seminars this week aimed at improving industrial relations between unions, Government and employers.
Sponsored by the Ministry of Home Affairs, the series is part of annual talks which in the past have produced new industrial guidelines.
This week the seminars will concentrate on improved labour relations and how to adopt a less confrontational approach, specifically when dealing with collective bargaining.
"It is our hope that information received and the interaction achieved through these exercises will ultimately result in mutual respect and trust between labour and management,'' said Home Affairs Minister, the Hon. Quinton Edness.
"The less confrontational approach is a new trend in labour relations, based on promoting mutual interests rather than holding rigid positions. With full participation by all the parties, Bermuda can ultimately become a model for industrial relations,'' he said.
Mr. Don McCabe-Power and his wife, Mrs. Maureen McCabe-Power of the Human System Development Group and Prof. Dan Kruger, of Michigan State University, will lead the seminars.
Past seminars have examined labour law, the Labour Advisory Council, communications and confrontation. Last year the seminars resulted in the publication of the Code of Good Industrial Relations Practice and the Code of Good Employment Practice.
About 60 people are expected to attend the seminars which will be launched by Mr. Edness today at the Hamilton Princess Hotel.
