Too early to gauge effect of merger -- BA
merger between the company and an American rival will affect air travel to Bermuda.
The European Commission has confirmed that it had granted approval for BA to merge with American Airlines, creating one of the world's biggest airline companies.
But the merger will only go ahead if the two companies agree to slash services on transatlantic routes.
And some analysts believe that both BA and American Airlines will also have to implement redundancies in a bid to streamline their operation. BA spokeswoman Sally Singleton said that the approval was welcomed and encouraging, but would not speculate how it would affect future air travel to and from the Island.
"We have no idea how it will affect Bermuda yet,'' she said.
"We are very encouraged by the news but other than that I can't really comment. We've been waiting for two years for this decision but it's still going to take a while to go through, both in the UK and the US, before Bermuda even comes into the picture - it's a long way down the line.''
