UBP MPs off to commiserate with their UK Tory comrades

Opposition MP Cole Simons and Sen. Mark Pettingill are set to fly to England -- to pick the brains of UK Conservatives as they rebuild a party shattered after the British Labour Party landslide two years ago.

Government Whip Cole Simons said: "Basically, we want to see how they are rebuilding and see what we can pick up from them.

"... they've had their problems and we share the same conservative philosophies -- but we have to change with the times.

But he insisted: "We're doing a good job as Opposition and want to do an even better one...'' The trip to the Conservative conference, to be held in Blackpool, came about after Mr. Simons met Tory party chiefs at their London headquarters earlier this year.

Mr. Simons said: "We're going with an open mind and hopefully I'll be able to bring something back for the country and something back for the party.'' The Tories crashed to defeat in 1997 after a stretch of 18 years in power -- the United Bermuda Party fell from grace last year after almost 30 years in charge.

Mr. Simons said: "The UBP is going through similar changes to the Conservatives.

"They have a larger machinery than us and they use information technology very well -- they have a website and that's something we have to consider.'' Mr. Simons added: "I want to go there with a clean sheet and see what policies and methods we might adopt to improve and rebuild our popularity and credibility with the community.'' Mr. Simons said Mr. Hague had recently launched a "Listen to Britain'' campaign in an attempt to refurbish its image.

He added: "That means `listen to the people' and building a country based on what's best for the people and on what they think is best for themselves.'' The UBP trip to the Tory conference follows the ruling Progressive Labour Party Government's decision to attend the ruling UK Labour party conference in Bournemouth -- the first time Government has attended a party political conference and paid for out of the public purse.
