Allen, staff to meet over management issues
Tourism Minister David Allen is to meet his staff today to discuss their concerns about the way he is managing the Tourism Department.
The Royal Gazette revealed two weeks ago that staff are frustrated by Mr.
Allen's "micro-management'' of the department and alleged interference in the daily running of the office.
Staff considered calling in the Bermuda Public Services Association because they were concerned Mr. Allen was "over-stepping the mark'' by interfering with day-to-day decisions.
Staff recognised that while Mr. Allen and Government set policy, it is for civil servants to carry out the task of implementing decisions.
Tourism insiders alleged Mr. Allen would issue direct orders to staff who are under the control of Director of Tourism Richard Calderon.
Mr. Allen said last night that policy was clearly a matter set by Cabinet and that everyone had to get on with the job of implementing these initiatives.
But he conceded that his style was very "hands on.'' He said he had always been enthusiastically involved in projects and was never a "seat warmer''.
