Government, hampered by financial constraints, has handed over the task of building a stadium to be proud of to Mr. Lines.

He has agreed to head a team of trustees for the Stadium and expects to officially take on the job in November.

Premier the Hon. Sir John Swan announced that Mr. Lines was to be chairman of the trustees before Sunday's historic World Cup soccer victory over El Salvador.

Minister for Youth and Sport, the Hon. Senator Pamela Gordon said: "I know that it has been a bone of contention for some time that the stadium is incomplete.

"It has been unfair to blame the Government because there are other considerations like the College and other educational issues which must take a higher priority.

"The team and the country deserve a National Stadium. We have a team to be proud of, we need a stadium to match it.

"We needed someone with severe clout to try to get the business community involved. Donald Lines can complete the job.'' Mr. Lines said that he will be relying on experts to tell him and other trustees just what work can be done within financial limitations.

He said: "I have been to these games and the team has done us proud, but I suppose they are a little disheartened by the facilities at the National Stadium.'' But Mr. Lines believes there will be a limit to what the trustees can do. He added: "Because Government does not have unlimited resources we will have to find a way to do this.

"The Government's list of trustees is a blank sheet. They have asked me to suggest names and then they will check them.

"This will not change the ownership. It will still belong to the Government and the people of Bermuda but we will have all the responsibility.'' At present the stadium has one completed side with temporary seating around the other sides. Apart from the stands, there are limited toilet facilities for spectators and limited changing facilities for sportsmen.
