Bermuda Longtail converts to funky floating nightclub

New this summer to local entertainment is a floating nightclub in the newly-renovated MV Bermuda Longtail motor-yacht. Complete with disco lights and surround-sound music, the only nightclub on the water boasts top-notch entertainment and full bar facilities. The Bermuda Longtail is probably best known for its Happy Hour Booze Cruises, which run on Friday evenings from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Hundreds of people join the Longtail for two hours of fun and dancing in "the best party on the water'', where there is non-stop music by Bermuda's hottest DJs. The Longtail also offers a complete snorkelling experience. But the newest and most unique addition to the boat's cruise agenda is Club Longtail, a nightclub that cruises through the tiny islands in the Great Sound. Ideal for partygoers looking for a nighttime alternative to town, the Longtail runs two-and-a-half hour cruises on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings. The lower deck is designed as a lounge area where patrons can enjoy the quiet of the moonlight, while upstairs, people can enjoy the entertainment of local artists and dance to the beat. Owner of the MV Bermuda Longtail Mr. David Durham and his crew spent the winter refitting the motoryacht and creating a modern nightclub atmosphere in the boat's traditional colours -- pink, white and blue. The boat has been totally rewired electrically, said administrator Mr. Steven (Cooky) Brown. And it has been outfitted with brand new engines and a new generator, he said. As well, more space has been created in the cockpit by moving the steps to the stern of the boat. New support beams have been installed in the ceiling of the lower level to ensure a solid structure for the new nightclub overhead as well as for safety reasons. The glass bottom has also been removed from the boat and in its place is a funky, kidney-shaped bar. Designed by Mr. Durham and built by Mr. Bernard Davis, the bar was hand-painted in wacky colour schemes by the MV Longtail crew. Benches alongside the gunnel of the lower level are painted white with funky coloured legs. And stylish round tables are black with various hues of glittery pink table tops to effect that nightclub feeling.

Also available downstairs is a galley, which will be equipped shortly with a stove and refrigerator for guests who wish to bring food aboard. Both the upper and lower level of the MV Longtail can be enclosed with transparent curtains edged with pink and white canvas stripes if undesirable weather should develop. But in favourable weather, the curtains are neatly rolled up allowing guests to enjoy the night air. Upstairs the cockpit is used for dancing. And when the show is in action, chairs are lined up against the gunnel of the boat for maximum viewing purposes. State-of-the-art visual and surround sound system as well as special effects lighting is unique to the MV Bermuda Longtail. And full bar facilities including waiter service on board effects an atmosphere with all the comforts of a land-based club. Besides regular wine, beer and highballs, there are specialty drinks available which include Cooky's Special and the Longtail Cocktail. As well, guests can benefit from the special Longtail dinner show where they dine at Kiskadee's restaurant in the Belmont hotel and are picked up at Belmont dock for the floating night club show. The entire package sells for only $55. The nightclub cruise costs $30 and drinks are $3 each. The boat leaves Hamilton at 9:30 p.m and returns to the dock by midnight. Reservations are suggested and can be made through the Yhoshi Corporation at 292-0282.
