Bermudians take visitors on the road
Glenn Johnson and teaching golf pro, Alex Madeiros, are providing moped tours to visitors, taking them to various of the Island's attractions.
For just $20 per person they will guide a caravan of mopeds to Crystal Caves, the Perfume Factory and other attractions including the Aquarium, Museum and Zoo.
Mr. Johnson, who had been the activities director at Sonesta Beach Hotel, said: "The tourists still rent their bikes and we meet them and flag their bikes. We use bikes with signs that advise other motorists that it is a moped tour.
"We go to St. George's and other spots they would usually go to, as well as some areas they would normally miss, and of course we have lunch.
"Alex and I are trying to get some radios inside our helmets for easy communication. We are emphasising safety, keeping the group together.'' But the pair of entrepreneurs also intend to keep their nights busy, launching a new service, Time-Savers, promoting various businesses by video directly to tourists in the privacy of their hotel.
They call Time-Savers an advertising company, because they can provide direct marketing to groups of visitors at two major hotels, two nights a week for $10 a night.
The video of each business will be shown, and its brochures or other literature will be handed out during the show. And visitors would be able to ask questions of the featured establishments.
The moped tour is already attracting attention from major hotels.
Mr. Johnson said: "Everybody always has a good time. Tourists love it, because it is so much fun. They get to see the things they came here to see and also get to see some things that they would not normally. And it is a ball.'' The tour leaves at 10 a.m. and usually ends around three or four in the afternoon, with the guests swimming at Tobacco Bay.
"A lot of tourists say they would normally be afraid to rent mopeds, but they are happy to do so because we are there to guide them. They complain about the cost of taxis and say they would have taken the bus.
"But just the fact that we are riding with them, seems to comfort them about getting on mopeds. And we've been doing it rain, blow or shine, after a session with them about the flow of traffic and how things work.'' Mr. Johnson said that they've also had great response to the Time-Savers scheme.
