BGA's pharmacy manager combines career goals and great quality of life

Jon Turner, who heads the Pharmacy Team at BGA, brings a unique international perspective to this successful Bermudian company and a desire to provide the highest levels of customer satisfaction within an environment that is forever changing.

Mr. Turner's impressive background in supply chain management for some of the world's largest and best known companies, coupled with the highest professional pharmaceutical qualifications possible in the UK, make him uniquely placed to manage the often sensitive and special needs of many of the company's clients. They are namely Bermuda's doctors and retail pharmacies, The Bermuda Hospitals Board and a number of official Government bodies.

In a nutshell, Mr. Turner is responsible for importing and distributing a significant proportion of Bermuda's pharmaceutical products.

It is a challenging role that requires specific pharmaceutical expertise, a razor-sharp appreciation of the finer aspects of supply and distribution, and the capability to lead a team of extremely dedicated staff in meeting often excruciatingly tight time deadlines.

Mr. Turner's strengths lie with identifying, and then remaining focused on, the big picture and in understanding the global trends of the pharmaceutical industry and how the changes that take place in it, almost daily, will ultimately impact BGA.

Customer driven and with an overriding desire to find solutions to the challenges of supplying pharmaceuticals to Bermuda, Mr. Turner is capable of clarifying the goals and vision needed to ensure that BGA operates successfully within the local and international marketplaces.

I have a great team that work really hard and that makes all the difference,he says.

There are only six of us and we have to pull together if we are to meet the ever-changing needs of our customers. I do my best to provide an empowering work environment, which is necessary to ensure job satisfaction for everyone, and because so often my focus has to be on putting Bermuda central stage with the global pharmaceutical manufacturers.

When you take Bermuda and you place it on the world supply map for the pharmaceutical majors, it quite obviously ranks much lower in terms of market size and revenue generating opportunities than say North America. It means we have to be very clear, and extremely persuasive to ensure we have their attention.

"While they value Bermuda, their focus understandably lies on the larger markets.

Mr. Turner is tasked with making sure that BGA is 'heard' and that the victories he wins for the company are reflected in improved levels of customer service.

He has a Bachelor of Pharmacy with Honours and is a member of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain. His resume reads like a Who's Who of pharmaceutical companies; including AstraZeneca, Abbott Laboratories and Rhone, Poulenc Rorer.

Married to Glyn Hoskins-Turner, together they have one child, Emily, who turns three later this year. They both love Bermuda and hope to remain here for as long as they are needed and able to give back to the community in which they feel privileged to live.

" Bermuda is a wonderful place in which to raise a child. We all love the outdoor life. Both Glyn and I enjoy weekends on the boat, hosting barbecues and attending pool parties with friends.

They have a family membership at the Bermuda Aquarium and believe in supporting Bermuda's efforts to preserve marine life.

One of Mr. Turner's main hobbies is scuba diving. In fact he was a scuba instructor at South Side Scuba, Bermuda, from June 1992 until October 1993.
