British Airways slashes winter fares

Local manager Philip Troake announced that a round-trip ticket to London will cost $549 midweek and $599 on weekends, starting January 16.

Advance purchase is required, he said, and payment must be made within 72 hours of the booking.

There is a minimum stay of seven days and a maximum stay of one month.

"We know that these fares are always popular with Bermuda travellers,'' Mr.

The College Volunteer Corps' appeal came after it collected 125 cans of food for the Lions while carol-singing over Christmas.

CVC spokesman Belcario Thomas said the group sang in the areas of Tamarind Vale, Warwick, and Gilbert Hill, Smith's Parish.

"We would like to thank the residents for their donations,'' he said.

Mr. Thomas explained the corps was made up of people aged 18 to 25, adding: "We are now looking for ideas for activities in the summer.'' Anyone who can help should ring Mr. Thomas on 293-1065.

HARBOUR RADIO SAYS FLARES WERE HOAX RAO Harbour Radio says flares were hoax A hoaxer may have been responsible for distress flares sighted off St.

George's, a spokesman for Harbour Radio said yesterday.

And he warned there are stiff penalties for anyone caught firing off red SOS signals without cause.

The Harbour Radio spokesman was speaking after a distress flare was sighted by a local boat on Tuesday night.

The boat investigated and a Police launch joined in the search, but nothing was found. Broadcast messages and a radar sweep by Harbour Radio also produced no result.

It is the second false alarm in the St. George's area in a week.

The Harbour Radio spokesman said: "We have reason to believe it could be a hoaxer ashore -- this kind of thing is a very great nuisance and waste of resources.'' And he appealed for people owning distress flares to check they have not been stolen or misused.

TEENAGED GIRL TAKE S30-FOOT TUMBLE POL Teenaged girl takes 30-foot tumble A teenaged girl fell almost 30 feet from a wall as Police officers watched.

Officers were called to a report of a domestic incident in St. George's Tuesday at about 2 a.m.

They spotted several young people on top of Blacksmiths Hill and stopped to ask if they knew about the incident.

A Police spokesperson said: "A young girl was standing on top of a road-side wall.

"The officers were asking the young people if they knew anything about the domestic dispute and while they were doing that the girl fell.'' Her fall was broken by a shed roof and she was rescued by Police, Fire crews and the ambulance and taken to the King Edward VII Memorial Hospital.

The teenager suffered a suspected broken leg as well as cuts and bruises.

Police investigations into the incident are continuing.

WOMAN'S SCREAM SCARED PROWLER OFF CRM Woman's scream scared prowler off Prowlers took fright and ran when a woman screamed after hearing a voice outside a window in the early hours of yesterday morning.

The incident happened in Kitchener's Close, Sandys, at around 1 a.m. when the woman heard a man say "Look, they're sleeping.'' Police arrived 15 minutes after the incident took place and searched the area around the house, but without result.

MAN FIED $4900 FOR CARELESS DRIVING CTS Man fined $400 for careless driving Careless driver Christopher Darrell was fined $400 yesterday.

Darrell was involved in a three-vehicle crash on North Shore Road, Shelly Bay, Magistrates' Court heard.

Prosecutor Sgt. Phil Taylor said 32-year-old Darrell was driving a company van when he failed to see a car ahead of him on October 8 last year.

His van clipped the back of the car and then collided with a motorcyclist, who suffered a broken ankle.

Darrell, of North Shore Road, Devonshire, admitted driving without due care and attention.

SMITH'S COUPLE HIT TWICE BY THIEVES CRM Smith's couple hit twice by thieves An unlucky Smith's Parish couple were hit by thieves twice in the space of two days.

The latest took place on Tuesday when raiders hit the Lightbourne Lane house sometime between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., stealing a variety of items worth a total of $1,500.

Taken were a Technics equaliser and amplifier, a video camera, an Olympic 35mm camera, gold stud and sapphire earrings, a cedar jewellery box and reggae CDs.

In a separate incident, a house in Swansville Drive, Warwick, was broken into during the day. A quantity of cash was stolen from a plastic jar in a child's bedroom.

TEENAGE RIDER SCRAPED UP IN ACCIDENT AC Teenage rider scraped up in accident A 17-year-old girl cycle rider suffered cuts and scrapes after her bike was in collision with a car.

The accident, involving a white Nissan and a black PGO Galant, happened at the junction of Woodlawn Road and Middle Road, Sandys.

The girl injured her face, hands and legs in the accident. The 70-year-old woman driver, from Southampton, was not injured. Police inquiries are continuing.

CASH STOLEN DRUING THREE BREAK-INS CRM Cash stolen during three break-ins Cash and coins were stolen from three homes on Monday evening.

A 24-year-old St. George's man reported that he returned to his Mount Road, St. George's home on Monday evening after work and found his apartment had been broken into.

And a housesitter for a home in Hamilton Parish reported a break-in sometime between 10 a.m. Sunday and 2 a.m. on Monday.

The housesitter told Police he was unsure whether any property had been taken but a glass bowl that contained foreign coins was found broken outside the entry point.

Meanwhile, a 31-year-old Frith Farm, Paget woman said her home was broken into on Monday sometime between 8.00 and 9.00 p.m.

The thief entered her home and knocked down a book case before making off with some money from the bedroom.

CHRISTMAS TREE ALIGHT AT NIGHTLCUB FIR Christmas tree alight at nightclub Firemen dealt with a Christmas tree blaze outside the Oasis nightclub in Front Street at about 3.20 a.m. on Tuesday.

The tree had been in a pile of trash and set a alight, said a Fire Service spokesman. "Matches were found in the area,'' he added.
