CIB opens Bermuda branch
for the construction industry in the United Kingdom, has been established in Bermuda.
The first chairman of the local branch is Mr. Don Baldwin, buildings managers for the Bermuda Government's Works and Engineering Department.
Other management committee members are Mr. Paul Lowry, who is secretary and treasurer, and Mr. John Carey, of Bermuda College.
Mr. Baldwin said the Bermuda branch has about 14 members, several of whom are Bermudians.
"We're a group of professionally qualified people who hold regular meetings to discuss matters of interest to builders on the Island,'' he said. One item the new committee is currently working on is to get the United States building authorities to recognise the CIB qualification.
"Our branch has been having discussions with our American counterpart with a view to getting the European qualification on a parity with the American qualification,'' said Mr. Baldwin.
"This would mean that, instead of taking the UK examination, builders on the Island could take the US version, which is more geared towards Bermuda regulations.'' The CIB's overall president, Mr. David Laing, and CEO Mr. Keith Banbury recently visited Bermuda, where they met with the Governor, Lord Waddington, Premier the Hon. Sir John Swan and Dr. Clarence Terceira, the Minister of Works and Engineering.
