College chairman Horton removed

Government Boards this year. While there were no startling changes, many who attracted controversy have been ousted.

The absence of Progressive Labour Party (PLP) backbencher Randolph Horton, from the Bermuda College Board of Governors was one of the most notable changes.

Mr. Horton, who served as chairman of the Board last year, came under fire from a contingent of both staff and students last April.

Prompted into action over the news that the College's vice president, Dr.

Donald Peters would have to go, the group led by Bermuda College staffer Laverne Furbert, called for the immediate resignation or dismissal of both Mr.

Horton and Bermuda College president, Dr. George Cook.

Prominent accountant Jan Spiering a former member of the Board, has succeeded Mr. Horton as chairman. Government Sen. Patrice Parris has been named the deputy chairman, replacing Quinton Butterfield who remains on the Board.

In the absence of a chief executive officer for the Bermuda Hospitals Board, the former chairman Raymonde Dill faced a barrage of criticism and was even labelled "a little dictator''.

Mr. Dill is no longer on the Board and his deputy chairman, Ianthia Wade, has taken over the helm. Mr. Dill may also have been replaced to enable him to concentrate on his job as general manager of the Bermuda Housing Corporation.

He also continues as chairman of the Small Business Development Corporation.

There was much ado when fisherman James Parris, a member of the former Marine Resources Board was charged with using illegal fish pots. He has been removed from the Board.

Outspoken Laverne Furbert is no longer on the Broadcast Commission. Also absent from the Immigration board is activist Raymond Russell.

Lawyer Carlson Philip has stepped aside as head of the Committee for Unity and Racial Equality (CURE) with Board member Florenz Maxwell assuming the helm.

Shaun Morris has been replaced as chairman of the CedarBridge Board by lawyer Marc Telemaque who served as deputy chairman last year. And Corey Butterfield, public relations officer for the PLP, has become the deputy.
